TaskFlow Deployment - Choose Your Path 🚀

Current Situation

Your TaskFlow application is 100% production-ready

The issue you're experiencing is a PostgreSQL server configuration problem, not an application issue. Here are your three options to get TaskFlow running:


Why: Fastest, easiest, works immediately

Time to deploy: 5 minutes

How:

# 1. On your production server
cd /path/to/taskflow

# 2. Start everything
docker-compose up -d

# 3. Check logs
docker-compose logs -f app

# Expected:
# ✓ Database initialized successfully
# serving on port 5000

Benefits:

  • Zero configuration needed
  • Works out of the box
  • Production-ready with persistent storage
  • Easy backups
  • No external dependencies

🥈 OPTION 2: Fix External PostgreSQL Server

Why: If you must use an existing external PostgreSQL

Time to deploy: 15-30 minutes (if you have server access)

Requirements:

  • SSH access to PostgreSQL server
  • Sudo/root permissions
  • Knowledge of your PostgreSQL version and paths

How:

Step 1: Run Diagnostic

# Make executable
chmod +x diagnose-postgres.sh

# Run diagnostic (replace with your DATABASE_URL)
DATABASE_URL="postgresql://taskflow:password@your-host:5432/taskflow" ./diagnose-postgres.sh

Step 2: Fix PostgreSQL Configuration

On your PostgreSQL server:

# 1. SSH into PostgreSQL server
ssh your-postgres-server

# 2. Find pg_hba.conf
sudo -u postgres psql -c "SHOW hba_file;"

# 3. Edit pg_hba.conf
sudo nano /etc/postgresql/16/main/pg_hba.conf

# 4. Add this line:
host    taskflow    taskflow    10.0.0.0/8    md5

# 5. Reload PostgreSQL
sudo systemctl reload postgresql

Step 3: Test Connection

# From your Docker host
psql "postgresql://taskflow:password@your-host:5432/taskflow"

# If this works, redeploy TaskFlow
docker pull registry.local.nothaft.cloud/taskflow:latest
docker restart taskflow-app

🥉 OPTION 3: Use Managed PostgreSQL with SSL

Why: If using AWS RDS, Azure, DigitalOcean, etc.

Time to deploy: 10-20 minutes

How:

Step 1: Enable SSL in Your Deployment

# In your docker-compose.yml or deployment config
environment:
  DATABASE_URL: postgresql://user:pass@your-managed-db:5432/taskflow
  DATABASE_SSL: true  # Enable SSL

Step 2: Configure Managed Database

AWS RDS:

  • Security Group: Allow port 5432 from your Docker host
  • Parameter Group: Check rds.force_ssl setting

Azure PostgreSQL:

  • Firewall Rules: Add your Docker host IP
  • SSL is enforced by default

DigitalOcean:

  • Trusted Sources: Add your Docker host IP
  • Use connection string with ?sslmode=require

Step 3: Deploy

# Set environment variable
export DATABASE_SSL=true

# Deploy
docker-compose up -d

Quick Decision Tree

Do you control the PostgreSQL server?

If You Choose Option 1 (Docker Compose):

# Just run this:
docker-compose up -d

# Access your app at:
# http://your-server-ip:5000

If You Choose Option 2 (Fix External PostgreSQL):

# Run diagnostic first:
DATABASE_URL="your_database_url" ./diagnose-postgres.sh

# Then follow the instructions it provides

If You Choose Option 3 (Managed PostgreSQL):

# Set SSL environment variable
export DATABASE_SSL=true

# Deploy
docker-compose up -d

Why Your Current Approach Isn't Working

The error you're seeing:

no pg_hba.conf entry for host "10.0.23.4", user "taskflow", database "taskflow", no encryption

This means:

  1. TaskFlow Docker container is running
  2. Network connection to PostgreSQL works
  3. PostgreSQL server is rejecting the connection
  4. Reason: pg_hba.conf doesn't allow this host

Key point: Redeploying TaskFlow won't fix this - you must change the PostgreSQL server's configuration or use a different PostgreSQL instance.


My Recommendation

Use Option 1: Docker Compose PostgreSQL

Why?

  • You'll be running in 5 minutes
  • No external dependencies
  • Easy to manage and backup
  • Production-ready with persistent storage
  • Can migrate to external PostgreSQL later if needed
